Statement of Intentions

1. What is the main message or theme you want to convey to the audience through this film?
The main message that I want to convey to the audience is that this is a teen movie with a twist as it is set in Northern Ireland. Traditionally teen movies are set in American high schools. So this is film is a spoof of the classic Hollywood teen movie.

2. Summarise the storyline.
The Jock (Paddy, captain of the school football team) is the most popular kid in the school with his own troublesome gang. But when he is told he is failing his exams, fate leads him to a nerd whose name is Shauna, who offers to help him out after the jock supposedly helping out her brother.

3. What type of narrative structure have you chosen, explain why?
The narrative structure of this film will be told through the main character, the jock. Usually in teen/high school movies the story is told either through the most popular person usually being the jock or it could be done the complete opposite way and done through the nerd for example ‘Napoleon Dynamite’ and sometimes intercutting and showing the view of the jock and nerd like in ‘She’s All That’.

4. What were your influences?
The directors who influenced me where Keenen Ivory who was the director of ‘Scary Movie’ and ‘Scary Movie 2’. It was these films that inspired me to make a spoof as Keenen Ivory created a lot of humour by spoofing the horror film ‘Scream’ with the film ‘Scary Movie’. The other director who inspired me was Robert Iscove who was the director of ‘She’s All That’. This film was an American high school teen movie which I liked and found funny. I combined these two things together and ended up with a spoof of a teen movie.

The techniques and styles of these two directors is to use high key lighting e.g. the Opening scene of ‘she’s all that’ where the jock is walking down the corridor, Which is the standard, conventional lighting in Hollywood and most notably used in musicals and comedy to keep the set very bright to give the setting or scene that sense of light heartedness and atmosphere opposed to low key lighting used for horrors etc. The costumes worn in ‘She’s All That’ also gave me a sense of what clothing my own characters would wear in my film although we have school uniforms. But the school uniforms can be fixed to show how the characters personalities for example; the Jock may have his shirt tail hanging out and his tie half done with maybe a jacket over the top of his school jumper and the nerd would have her uniform sitting perfect.

5. How will you use these influences to make your film?
I will use these influences to make my film by using three point lighting to keep my set very bright. I have also used the influences from ‘She’s All That’ for my characters costumes which will be using stereotypes to get across some of the comedy. My film is set in Northern Ireland so therefore the characters costumes wont be jockey jackets but they will have there school uniforms tweaked like mentioned above.

6. Why are you using these techniques, how will they impact upon the audience?
I hope by using these techniques and influences, I can make my audience spot that this film is meant to be a spoof/comedy of a teen movie with the twist of it being set in Northern Ireland with northern Irish settings etc. A lot of the comedy in my film will be done visually through the costumes and setting and orally through what the characters say and how they say it for example; the way the teacher keeps saying “God damn it” whenever he speaks implies that he is a hard-line teacher who wants the best for his pupils but goes over the top. The way these few words are said and the context they are in will make it funny.

7. Explain how you want your film to look and feel.
My film is being shot in school; therefore the mise en scene is fairly straight forward as I will have the most of the props that I will need already in school. I want to keep the lighting bright to give of that comic atmosphere/mood and have a modern day soundtrack e.g. something that teenagers would listen to, possibly pop or rock but would have to remix the songs for copyright purposes. I want the look and feel of a Northern Irish school as I think this will get a lot more of the humour across.

8. Explain why you want it to look and feel this way.
The reasons why I want my film to look and feel this way is to get a lot of the humour across and to actually physically show that the film is a spoof. I will show that the film is a spoof with the way the characters are dressed and some of the characters lines which are taken from other movies e.g. “This one time at band camp” which is taken from American Pie.
